Wasn’t there an article a few months back saying Clarence Thomas has become the de facto Chief Justice?

Seems like this article is kind of say the same thing.

Clarence Thomas also skipped Biden's fauxnauguration, along with Breyer and Alito (if I remember right). "Covid concerns" was the reason given.

I don't know, I feel like if there is something to everything that happens around here, then maybe there was something to that as well.
