I used to do that before all this craziness. I'd use birthday VISA / MC / AMEX gift cards my parents would sometimes send me (usualy VISA) for personal expenditures including groceries and gas. I used to consider my birthday a break from paying for my own shit lol.

Yea same. Once I hit 18 I dont think I ever really used anything birthday related on any "wants" just the "needs" in order to save a little more for an emergency.

Now, when it comes to gift times, the wife and I make lists of things that are "want" gifts and "need" gifts with similar reasoning.

Same, if I want something I usually buy it myself well before Christmas or my Birthday. Things on my wish list are things I don't want badly.
