They were pretty much alone in Ukraine. The authorities would not take action even though people were dying.

Unfortunately it's not "their" Article 5, it's ours too, as the US is a major part of NATO and we are bound by its provisions. I have long thought, since the fall of the Soviet Union in Reagan's days, that NATO has outlived its usefulness and should be dissolved. Today each European nation is well equipped to handle their own defense, and it would certainly save the US a lot of money if we were no longer bound by it.
