The Romans thought the same thing hundreds of years after Jesus ascended.
Those who survived the Black Plague thought for sure it meant the end.
Those who saw WWI and WWII believed they were in the end times. And same with those who lived through the Cold War.
I think even now is such a time of poetic foreshadowing. I could be wrong and that's okay. It's just that a lot of people from different walks of life haven't turned against Jesus. They have issues with the religiosity of Christianity, but the "lost" still listen to Jesus. This is a direct conflict with end times prophecy that suggests most of the world will make war with Jesus... Well most of the world just wants to live their lives in peace.
Either way it's a win for all of us. This evil will not be allowed to continue.
