Fake modern historians have been blasting away for centuries over John Adams' Sedition Act. But the reality is that the Congress passed it with a super majority, Court upheld it, and it was very popular amongst most of the people at the time. Why? Because the average sane American didn't want to get dragged into the war between the British and French (like other various European powers got sucked in). Yet pro British and pro French warhawks, mostly through media outlets, tried to coerce the Washington and then Adams administrations into war... it's one of the reasons why Adams reelection was stolen (shenanigans in GA, SC, NC and VA due to Democratic-Republican pushes for general ticket winner-take-all electoral appointment system).
