I have been a high school teacher for more than 20 years, and I strongly support arming teachers. Having said that, allow me to qualify that slightly. Those teachers that are to be armed should have the training and personality/mindset that is required to function appropriately in a crisis/high stress situation. People who panic are people who die, worse, they get people around them killed.
I believe that the first candidates to be considered should be prior military (particularly those who served in a combat MOS) and law enforcement. There are several individuals that I work with who should under no circumstances ever be given a weapon, not even to save their own life. They would be the ones that would be running down the hallway, weapon in hand, getting shot in the back, or hiding under a desk paralyzed with fear.
Training should be provided, at least semi annually, with a local law enforcement agency. The more teachers that are able to have weapons, the safer the school will be. I know that some feeble minded buffoon will play the what if game and ask, "But what if one of the teachers wigs out and starts shooting up the school?" Well, it's quite simple, the other armed teachers/SRO will take them out. Just knowing that is likely enough to discourage that from happening.
