You are right that this has been happening a long time. Look at how the Balkans was broken up by NATO in the 90s. Even back then the Russians protested how it was done by NATO.

The signs were always there but it is more obvious now.

It is ironic that the Russians are Balkanizing and splitting up Ukraine just like what NATO did to Eastern Europe in the 90s.
