I have the Real ID, in VA it's nothing but a star on my license and I think required an extra form of ID to verify.

It's nothing like an electronic passport, although there may very well be something embedded in it.

I got it when it first became available in VA as I had to get a replacement anyway. I think it was saying at some point you'd need Real ID to fly non-internationally and to enter Federal facilities.
