The problem with knee jerk reactions to things like these is many people don't think things all the way through. Verifying identity is important to prevent identity theft and fraud. ID's should be hard to forge and obtaining a legitimate one should require due diligence to avoid having society devolve into chaos. The illegal aliens streaming across the border should be processed with biometrics and DNA swabs for developing a database. It is the same for any criminal. All criminals have their biometrics recorded after arrest. Although, I think it should only be after conviction, but that is a topic for another day.
