I never got to meet him. He was my step Uncle and he lied about his age to join the Marines. He was 17 when he joined. My step grandfather had to sign the papers attesting to his age. He never spoke of Raymond and never forgave himself. It is Raymond I think of when I see the demons trying to rip our great country down and Raymond who fuels my cold fury.
Wonderful memory. But, imo, if he is truly family in your mind, you can drop the 'step' stuff.
Thats incredible. Thank you for sharing. Iwo is one of those historical events I think about often. How brave these Marines were to fight on that tiny island and take it. It's such a great example of what it means to be American, I think. You are fighting in a world war, but you're taking the smallest of islands against an enemy that will fight to the bitter end with no comrades left.
