During WWII, western Ukraine was very cozy to the Nazis. To the point where even after it was iver, many Nazis there avoided prosecution like the Nuremburg trials. The ideas fostered there and formed the root of ideology for groups like the Azov battalion.

Post-2014 the sights were set on Ukrainians with ethnic Russian backgrounds like many found in Eastern Ukraine.
