It's a defensive barrage.
The enemy is trying to break up the offensive, and stall the advance of the forces of good.
We're seeing a desperate attempt to buy time by the forces of evil to rearrange their forces and prevent a breakthrough by the forces of good.
Evil will fail, but in doing so, they'll flail and thrash.
A cornered and dying beast is still dangerous.
