When I was 5 yrs old, my mother told me (girl) and my brother we could be whatever we wanted when we grew up and that we should follow our hearts.
I had just watched the Wizard of Oz for the first time, and because I was a very girly girl, I saw the beautiful Glinda the Good Witch who floated down from heaven in a lighted orb as the person I most wanted to be. She wore a sparkly gown, diamond tiara and held a glittering wand. Plus I could grant wishes! What's not to like?
Soon I started first grade and the teacher sent home a note telling my mother that I told her "I wanted to be a Fairy when I grew up" (she misunderstood) and she suggested my mother explain to me why that was not possible. My older brother who was 14, read the note and thought it was hilarious. He then proceeded to tell me that my idea was bad and that I really should want to be a big red truck. Trucks were dependable, could haul things and drive fast and red was the best color.
I was so confused and didn't like that idea at all. I didn't understand why my brother would want that for me! What a prankster. It took me another year or so before I realized the truth of things. I mean - he should be the truck, right??
