As an android using family, I keep a hard copy of pics, but that's it. I don't really care if I lose texts or pretty much anything else, if it's important I back it up elsewhere on my end and it probably was never on my phone.
So, I'd say no, it's not normal. iCloud backups have full system images tho, that would be a different thing.
I don't use a laptop, but I do have everything on my home computer. I don't have any texts, as I don't use a cellphone. I do have every email I've ever sent or received since the 80s.
I have been saving other things for over 60 years. It's a compulsion caused by Aspergers. I've been writing for over 60 years and tape recording stuff for over 50 years. I just put a clip from my audio archive from almost 50 years ago on FB to give relatives some memories.
That does not explain the voicemails and complete lack of encryption. He had to go out of his way to copy all of this data to the computer since iCloud does not locally store this on the MacBook and then disable all of the built in encryption on a MacBook. The claim is that the data is on the hard drive, not iCloud.
Whole thing is strange and makes me believe there is much more to this story. Seems like someone was trying to “out” him by releasing this.

Depends, if you have a bunch of incriminating stuff, do you want it all in yhe cloud or on several HDs or in one location you control?
Some would say no, it dont make sense. But if you need it all at a moments notice rigth there with you. Then it could be a reason for it.
