There's no such thing as an "assault rifle."
Actually there is, though the term has a fairly specific military use: a rifle chambered for a medium-power cartridge and capable of full automatic fire. The archtypes of this category were the World War II German Sturmgewehr 44 and American M2 carbine. Submachine guns fired pistol ammunition. Fully-automatic rifles were originally full-size (e.g., the BAR and M-14).
