I would say the Protestant reformation was a very early project to split the Christians to make them easier to conquer. Maybe the earliest one I can think of.
No, think of the schism in Christianity that occurred in 1054 when the Bishop of Rome decided he was to rule over the world. The beginning of Roman Catholicism. Evil. The Bishop of Rome was one bishop among hundreds, and all considered themselves equal in authority. But the Pope tried to change all that, and he brought about all the divisions we now see. 23,000 different Protestant denominations. In Christianity, there are no denominations! It is the one, holy, catholic (meaning "universal") and apostolic church. One. Not thousands. One.
