I think he really is gay and that, combined with his poor acting skills. is why his career as a leading man never took off.

He was a weenie boy who lucked into lasting fame in 1976, just as the cultural powers that be started pushing unisex clothing and bisexuality in general. Coincidentally this was right about the same time Bruce Jenner happened along.
