My husband got shingles for the first time this year. I treated it with a blend of essential oils and it worked pretty good but later came upon Dr. Schnaubelt's (Ph.D in Aromatherapy) suggestion to use Ravensara and Caullophyllum (or tamanu) and that was gold. It was a long, painful learning experience but I certainly believe I know exactly what to do next time. It was rough for sure. I also ordered some homeopathics specific to shingles but caullophyllum and ravensara used at the first signs should stop it in its' tracks.
I also used L-lysine and he started on NAC which helped. Just be careful with those because they lower blood pressure and NAC is not compatible with Verapamil (which he was on) and he blacked out. Unfortunately I didn't know Verapamil interacted with so many things. Fortunately he was at home. So I told the doctor to take him off that because the NAC would serve him better and it has. Now he takes NAC every day and has balanced his blood pressure with just lisiniprol. So that's what I discovered concerning shingles.
You can develop an allergy to it at any time causing angioedema of the face and throat. Once you've had a small reaction future ones are guaranteed and will be worse. And can continue at random for as long as a year after you discontinue use of the drug.
Mine started with a swollen eyelid one day at work, went home thought maybe it was a stye.
Until a few weeks later my throat almost closed up and I called the ambulance but didn't end up going as the guys and I talked it over.
Got off that shit immediately 2 years ago and have been fine.
