Rome indeed was mired in civil war. Interestingly, the same was true of Byzanthium. its power waned due to internal struggle.

one thought I got when going over this history: The Western empire (Rome) spread all the way west up to America. Byzanthium spread east ward, Moskou and in a way Middle-East.
