If you were a "blood thirsty" and "evil" country, would you ask for your enemy to surrender?
Yes? An enemy that fights to the death is far more dangerous than one who will surrender. Look at the Japanese in WWII.
Yes, but... When the difference in force projection is massive like it is here, they're not really that dangerous to Russia overall from a militaristic standpoint.
Other than releasing a deadly pathogen.
I recommend you listen to Dan Carlins hardcore history about the war in the pacific. Specifically how tough it was to fight the Japanese even after they were militarily defeated.
Limiting casualities?? PR moves?? Your guess is as good as mine.
I understand history.. we nuked Japan 2x..and saved an est. million US svc men from death by invading Japan..however..RU is kicking their asses..Ukraine is done.
It's not often mentioned, but the atomic bombs probably saved several million Japanese lives as well. Brainwashed as they were, the Japanese civilians, man woman and child, would have fought to the death to defend the Home Islands from what they had been told were the American Monsters.
My late uncle was in the Pacific War, and he told me how his shipmates were terrified that the Japanese government wouldn't surrender, because the entire population would have fought like demons against an American invasion. It would have been the greatest bloodbath in history, for both sides.
I am no great fan of Harry Truman, but, horrible as it was, I think his decision to use nuclear bombs was the right one.
Yes the "terror" was real and the Japanese would have been slaughtered as well..just look at Okinawa and how insane they were..even the civilians..thanks for the convo.
