That idea of calling oneself by a plural...

It sounds like the person has DID (dissociative identity disorder) -- multiple personalities.

Or is it a way of including one's demons in the mix?

Or is it a variation on the royal "we"?

Knowing the disorder, it is probably a royal "we" and they get a kick out of forcing people to refer to them by the royal pronoun. Trickery, sure, but I bet it strokes their twisted ego.
