I've said that repeatedly. "Marriage" is a church ceremony. The contractual part is up to the government. A contract can be between any two adults or even among a group of adults. The two ideas should be separate.
This 100%, except I'd say the "wedding" is a church/religious ceremony. You can have a wedding and still not be legally married. Might be surprised at how many people do this.
Every culture in history has seen marriage as a legal contract. It was meant to protect the parties in it, including the extended families, as far as what happened to the money, possessions, and children if one of the partners died or abandoned the other.
It is a legal contract and always, always has been. That's why people can get married at the office of a justice of the peace and it's 100% legal, but if you don't get that marriage license you can have a million-dollar wedding and it won't mean a thing if your spouse dies and the relatives start fighting over who gets (what you thought was) your house and your kids.
