Government should have nothing to do with marriage.
In any direction though. That also means benefits disappear though, like tax benefits.
I mean thats one of the few things that actually did get amended into the constitution
I slightly disagree with this. Government should try to encourage behavior that benefits the state while discouraging behavior that is detrimental to it.
Heterosexual marriage benefits the state in that it encourages stability. Hetero married couples have children and that preserves promotes economic and cultural stability. So I am fine with the government encouraging hetero marriage via things like child tax credits, being able to file joint tax returns, declaring dependents, etc.
Although, considering how prevalent divorce is now, I am now questioning whether this is still true.
There’s also another important part of a marriage license that people forget. Most states make you do blood tests. This is to ensure that when you do have children they don’t come out retarded. People forget, back in the day… There was a lot of inbreeding. A lot of cousins would marry each other, and the genetics were untenable
An income tax is an assault on freedom. Without this system, government would never has gotten this out of control.
Less government is always the better option.
Marriage and anything considered a personal life is no business of government... or anyone.
