Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD. — Jeremiah 7:11
Recently, I was driving near Greenville, SC when I noticed an abandoned church building. The grass was overgrown, the parking lot was in horrible condition, and the building had broken glass. The signs were removed so I could not tell you the name of the church, but it was obvious the church had been closed for some time.
It really shouldn’t be surprising given some of the recent news in the last few years. In a recent Gallup poll, less than half of those questioned said that religion was very important to them. The overwhelming majority admitted that religion was losing its influence in America. Only 47% said that they were a member of a church. Less than one-third said they had attended a religious service in the past week. While 81% believe in God, only half of those questioned believed God could fix the problems in our nation.
So it is not surprising to read stories about 206-year-old churches closing. We have lost the importance of what church is all about. The focus of so many churches has been on politics and social causes instead of the cause of Christ. It’s not surprising given that only 37% of evangelical pastors have a Biblical worldview that they bring to their church. The church is not a place for politics and social clubs, it is a place to educate and empower Christians to be about the work of God in this world.
If we expect things to get better across the world, we need the Christian influence and education that can only be found in churches once again. We do not need social clubs and causes, we need the teaching and preaching of the word of God. We do not need flashy programs and music, we need Jesus above all! How can we ever expect God to deal with sin when 2 in 3 Christians do not even know how to share Jesus with someone.
Church has to become important once again and the focus in the church needs to be on God not the things of the world. As Christians, we need to fall in love with the church again. We need our pastors to fall in love with teaching and preaching once again. So today, pray that God will stir your heart and the heart of Christians all across the world that they see the importance of church once again. Rather than seeing empty pews, we need to see the pews full once again with people who have a desire to hear from God and see Him work in our lives.

2021 I started going to church again- mainly b/c the government was shutting them down b/c of COVID and I felt compelled to say no way are they going to infringe on that right. So I told myself- go every Sunday & holy day for 1 year. I was praying at home every day- but alone. Bible tells us if more than 2 pray in His name He will hear. So then and even now I realize we NEED each other every Sunday. We need to collectively pray together to our Creator and Sundays are the day. The pastor or priest is just the pizza delivery man- he delivers the message-but We The People make up the Church. The church is only as good as it’s people- so we ourselves need to contribute in order to make our church’s great again. Corruption is everywhere- but just as we should get more involved in local politics and school boards- so should we go back & take space in our church’s. My church is now my rock in my community and I’ve met some of the nicest people & am proud to be included- my only regret is that I waited so long. I thought I could just pray on my own & didn’t need the church. But there is something very inspiring when an entire congregation is praying the same prayer to the same God. I feel strengthened for the next week. When they say put on the armor of God- that is it- prayer, fasting & staying within Gods commandments. It’s our only protection against all this evil surrounding us.
Well said!
God bless you for sharing your testimony....
For so many years christians we on the defense. We hunkered down in churches. Since the internet we are now on the offense. This war would have been over if the church dealt with pedos within their ranks. People hate "church" now. It will get better but it will take time to get butts in pews.
This is why I struggle with going to church. I left the Catholic church over a decade ago due to politics and always talking about giving them money. Since, I've been to a Methodist, Episcopalian, UCC, and back to Catholic. I am sinner saved by grace, but struggling with the church aspect. I don't trust the Pope, don't feel I need his authority over me nor a church. As mentioned once we get back to the basic of loving and praising God, things will be different. Until then I find my struggles with church will continue.
...there are a lot of wonderful home churches springing up across the country...
...search "house churches in my area"....
...the church began in believers'homes and that is where it is going to end...
I can understand you’re ambivalence about the Pope. My personal belief is that Benedict is the real Pope-he never abdicated- Francis is the puppet. I had only went as far as my first communion so for about 6 months I went back to catechism and confirmed my faith this past Easter. I learned so much about the faith I didn’t know. There were 4 of us adults in class - 2 Catholics and 1 baptist and 1 jehova witness. The church is more than the Popes or the Priests - it’s the people. So if you don’t like the vibe of one church try the next town over. They have adult classes where you can ask about all the things that bother you. One night they had ‘stump the deacon’ night- where he would answer questions about all the sticky subjects. And as most people don’t realize deacons are a married priesthood in the faith. They can do everything as a priest except consecrate the host & absolve sins. My church has 2. Going back has been a huge blessing in my life- and I pray all can find the peace this has given me.
Your experience with the catholic church can be said the same for all denominations. Do you think Olsteen never asked for donations? Or Jim Bakker? How about Hinn or Swaggert? I live in an area with 2 catholic churches; 1 liberal, 1 conservative. People are switching from the liberal church and the conservative church is fully packed every mass. As for church authority I stick to doctrine - this Pope (any pope) has NO AUTHORITY over political issues. But we go to church to praise God and that's a personal thing.
Where I used to live I couldnt understand why so many Lutherans, Methodists and Presbyterians regularly attended my catholic church.
"The focus of so many churches has been on politics and social causes instead of the cause of Christ." Therein lies the problem and we have the beast of Rome to thank for it. This is the push that will prepare the world for one religion. We are to come out of Babylon and we are to be separated not united in ecumenicalism.
A local church that is hugely popular has all the current trappings...$ giveaways, praise team/bands, stage sets/lights, you tube videos, LOUD MUSIC (had to wear ear plugs which were available in the lobby), Starbucks, the latest church casual wear (torn jeans etc.), and the monotonous music that is HORRIBLE. I felt like I was at a rock concert...my seat was vibrating. The preacher is good but the packaging is horrible in my opinion. We need to fall in love with Jesus again. Strip everything away but Jesus and the gospel message of salvation through Christ alone. The world needs that Balm of Gilead. Make it desirable to live by the righteous laws of God in holiness and respect. As Andre Crouch sang..."JESUS IS THE ANSWER for this world today." This was a really astute, eye-opening devotion.
...I find the same is true in many churches...
...the reasoning is that it is what "the young people want"....
