Saul should never had so much influence on the founding of Christian thought.
Christ says "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?" Matthew 7:1-3
We are made in God's image. Why then should our nature be abandoned? We are to love each other, again as Christ says "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets." Matthew 7:12.
See to your own sins, give generously in material and spirit to those around you, even those you consider on the widest of paths.
His previous life of punitive measures against people unable to pay their taxes shines through in all of his thoughtful instruction.
I think this is why I have struggled so much with organized Christianity. I am literally too dumb to understand that passage and need it spelled out in kid terms. Co-opted commie education really did a number on me....
People who are not saved (non-Christians) are not filled with the Holy Spirit of God and are therefore slaves to their flesh (lusts, desires, addictions) and cannot be expected to obey all the laws of God. Therefore they cannot please God.
Christians are held to a much higher standard since we have a supernatural gift of self-control and perseverance. This however does not mean Christians become sinless or perfect in this life since we still have the same flesh all people have that tempts us to sin/disobey God.
Thank you very much for translating this for me, that was not at all what I thought I understood!
