The Opera World version with the London Symphony tends to be my go to (The one they used to show on PBS)
I love that version of the Mikado.
Did you know that Groucho Marx played Koko once in The Mikado? I wasn't thrilled with some of his liberties on the songs, but I just found the performance was released on DVD!
There's so many flavors to G&S, more than a Baskin Robbins.
My first role was the Mikado in a very truncated, paired-down version that we performed in 6th Grade (year 6 of primary school, which I think is equal to last year of elementary school?). Then, joined the chorus for Pirates in what you would call Junior High. (In Aus, high school is generally 6 years, encompassing both the junior and senior high school levels of the US). Then, got major roles for the next 3 or 4 years.
What's incredibly amazing is how long G&S has lasted, and how they have sustained and stood the test of time. That's legendary, isn't it?
Didn't know about Groucho, although I can seem him doing a total sendup. Koko is such a deliciously ludicrous character!
I will check those out!

Absolutely. The music is good, and the antics are memorable. It's also nice to have an opera in English!
The liberal mob hasnt been able to strike down the Mikado.
