Yes. I know for a fact pharma companies 'catch' doctors as early as in residency programs by covering certain expenses like books, all expense paid trips to medical seminars, etc.

Then when a doc begins in his practice he is followed by pharma, offered trips, dinners, vacations, etc. All they ask is the docs prescribe their products.
