An Airbus' Zephyr S solar-powered, very-high-altitude unmanned aircraft is in the midst of a long-duration test flight and has already been aloft for 17 days so far. The drone, sometimes described as a pseudo-satellite in terms of potential capabilities, took off from the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona last month for what the service says is a test of its highly efficient long-endurance flight characteristics as part of broader work to demonstrate its ability to serve as a persistent sensor platform.
The Zephyr S in question, a design originally known as the Zephyr 8, was first spotted on online flight tracking software taking off from an airstrip at Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) on June 15. For the next ten days, the unmanned aircraft, which has been using the callsign Zulu 82, flew various patterns over the adjacent Yuma Test Range and Kofa National Wildlife Refuge. This isn't an uncommon sight as Zephyr has been undergoing testing high above YPG for some time now.

That plane looks like a U2 spy plane maybe. Notice the altitude of 57, 500 feet. I don't know of any commercial jet that flies that high. And look at the shape of plane imposed on the map.
I have the tracker set to only military flights, so its definitely not a commercial flight. I am curious as to the plane too, that was part of the "it would be more impressive" because not only is it flying at that altitude, its doing some pretty crazy turns, at what I assume are really fast speeds.

ah ok, that makes a lot more sense. I guess its not AS wasteful as previously presumed, unless those drones have a really limited lifetime flight time before they are retired like a lot of military planes are.

If you look at the speed it is a fake number. In other words it's not reporting it's correct speed. And if you look at the icon configuration, it looks strangely like a U2 spy plane with the narrow fuselage and the enormous wing span.

I think some of it is flight schools doing training, but I have wondered lots of time "what the hell can they be doing zigzagging back and forth like that.
not sure if you caught it, but the pilot spelled "4 july" behind all the squares. I dont think they were looking for anyone, just wasting gas payed for by us.

you link a video of a non-military pilot dying in a plane crash, neither of which have anything to do with what this post is about. pilots are there to fly, to learn the dials/controls/etc of their specific class of vehicle (and of course situations as bad weather and all that, which are very possible to program into a simulator). the US military could/can/have bought flight simulators that simulate everything down to the trainee sitting in a replica cockpit of a plane. the simulators can be programmed to test the pilot an any situation its programmed to, in which case search and rescue, firefighting training is VERY much possible with a simulator.

just one of my pet peeves with our wasteful government when I get lost in watching this damn tracker. using these machines that drink thousands of gallons a flight to spell "4 july" in the sky and generally waste money, that will only MAYBE be seen by either other pilots, or people who watch the flight tracker(s), in the age of flight simulators and high maintenance on the actual planes to keep them up to standard, all while we are dealing with high fuel prices and overall "shortages". some frustrating shit.
