And if the kid is brainy, trade-school will take them very far. There is a brain gap at the top, because the theory, thirty or so years ago, was that trade school was for those who failed 'normal' education, sort of like a safety net.

But what do you know? Now, the construction trades are extremely complex, even at the level of residential housing. These days one has to literally be a lawyer, an architect and an engineer, as well as a psychologist (when encountering weeping clients) to comprehend building applications that can run into the hundreds of pages.

Also, a first year apprentice will coin it straight away, the combined industries are that desperate (Think plumbers, electricians and builders, as well as house-movers etc.) Compare that with a college degree, that only costs money.

Trade schools are great, I think college is BS, we'd all be better off learning from a mentor as an apprentice. That said, having a degree opens up access to jobs people can't otherwise eapply for. Worked out well for me, but a lot of people waste time and money in colleges.
