This says cumulative, wouldn’t that mean you keep adding them up so the graph would have to be this way regardless of any change in death rate up or down?
Cumulative plots, if the rate of increase or decrease remains the same, plot as straight lines. This data suggests that in 2022, the same rate of death has been occurring as in 2020 and 2021; the years where covid was causing excess deaths, along with suicides, drug overdoses, etc. The question is, why does it seem that the rate is still occurring, since covid is largely defeated/passed as a "deadly" infection?
A constant cumulative rate of change (increase or decrease), results in a straight line. This data suggests the straight line associated with the covid years (2020 and 2021) is about the same this year. We know the death rate during covid was up (both from covid and suicides, etc.) but why does it still seem to be at the same level?
Do we know Covid caused a significant uptick in deaths? I don't think Covid caused a drastic change in the overall death rate, hence the lack of significant change in the slope of your data. They simply swapped out the flu deaths for Covid. I would like to see this graph extended further into the past for comparison. I also think there might be a better way to illustrate the data. Perhaps take the derivative and drop the cumulative label so the rate of change is more apparent.
With more time, I could get the number of deaths listed each day, but that would take several hours. www.poughkeepsiejournal.com is available for anyone that would like to do a more detailed analysis. The data begins about mid Dec 2019, which is pretty odd. The reason the slope is about the same throughout the period of data is because other than a few weeks prior to covid starting, it is all covid or post-covid.
