Everyone I know calls them scrunchies. All the online sales sites that I just looked at call them scrunchies. Scunci is just a brand that sells scrunchies and a lot of other accessories.
Not fake news. The original hair tie was called a Scunci. It was named after the designer's dog. Since then, knockoff brands have come out with the misspelled version due to the common mispronunciation. But those of us who use them know the correct, original name. Sort of like duct tape also being called duck tape.
Yes. As I said. So many mispronounced duct tape as 'duck tape' that some of the newer brands named theirs 'duck tape' because it was funny and clever.
You can buy generic silver duct tape at any hardware store. Or you can get one of these which use both words:
They were always called scrunchies, even by the inventor, even though she named the company Scunci after the name of a pet.
Duck Tape is an actual brand of tape. The tape has been called duck tape since 1899 and duct tape since 1965, according to the Oxford English Dictionary. It was originally made of cotton duck fabric. It was used to waterproof ammo boxes in World War II. The tape called duct tape now is not used for duct work. They use a metal tape for that.
Reminds me of a series of texts I got out of the blue a year or so ago. It began:
Him: Sup
Me: Who is this?
Him: Cameron
Him: I still have your scrunchies lmao
Me: You have the wrong number
Him: Wym?
Him: Who dis then
Me: Who dis then? What kind of language are you speaking? I know no Cameron. Sorry. She must have given you a fake number.
Him: Naw for reals?
Me: Clearly. And, she left in such a hurry she left her 'scrunchies' behind. Sorry man.
Edit: For those that don't know what he was referring to, a girl's stretchy hair tie is called a Scunci, not a scrunchie.
