Exposure levels in photography easily explain this. If you exposed for the stars, the earth would be completely blown out. The stars are simply far dimmer than the sun lit earth.

So....what does happen to 'the lights in the sky?' given that they have gone somewhere.

Its all about exposure. Can you see stars during the daytime? No. Because everything else is way too bright.
