"Go-bags" are also for instances where, say, your house caught on fire. It doesn't have to be a city-wide tragedy for a go-bag to be useful.
This is a typical problem with preppers. They build a giant "bug-out" bag thinking that some large-scale emergency is going to happen where they're going to have to temporarily live in the woods and survive. When that's incredibly unlikely. What's most likely is you'll have to live with a relative for a short period of time, so you need stuff like deodorant and changes of clothes, not fire starters and hunting knives.
No offense to you, but if my house catches on fire, Im pretty sure Walmart still sells soap, deodorant, and T shirts. Preppers prepare for emergencies like civil unrest/ global market collapse/ large scale power grid collapse because in those situations, a trip to the store is probably not likely. I have one packed with medical supplies, tools, water filtration equipment, a .22 pistol, and ammunition. Its light enough and efficient enough to aid in safety and survival for 72 hours for any situation.
Personally, I feel like a go-bag is for "normal" emergencies, you have to rush to the hospital with a loved one for a night or two kind of thing.
A bug-out bag is the prepper live off grid big time emergency bag.
Imho, you should have both.
Idk when I decided this, but there I am.. lol
Walmart may sell soap, deodorant, and Tshirts, but are they open at 2 in the morning when you are forced out? Perhaps in your area, yes, but the last thing you'll want to do after a personal tragedy like a housefire is take a trip to Walmart. And, sure, your relative may have stuff you can borrow, but the normalcy of having your own stuff, especially after everything else you owned was destroyed, is crucial for a time like this.
Moreover, Walmart doesn't sell copies of your important documents and a harddrive of all your computer data.
This style of "bug-out" bag is incredibly common among the more realistic group of preppers, and it lends itself well to larger scale tragedies, as well. If a hurricane or tornado comes through, those stores may have been hit or may be out of stock as everyone else scrambles to buy shit.
"Preppers" aren't all people like you who focus on Hollywood level tragedies like civil unrest and global market collapse. And, even if they do, they recognize that these smaller scale tragedies are far more likely. To be honest, a bug out bag with survival equipment is typically a larp.
