This is why the 4 point "political compass" makes more sense. Right and left are economic policies, while social policies are up and down. It's split into communist/capitalist and authoritarian/libertarian scales, creating 4 quadrants.
All presidents in the US since at least Bush Sr have been in the right/authoritarian quadrant; basically inching us toward being ruled by unelected corporations. (Bill Gates, Facebook, Twitter, George Soros, Big pharma, etc)
Wisdom in the 4 quadrant approach, I would take issue with definitions, on the
Economic spectrum :
Communism / Free Market capitalism
(capitalism has so many bastard stepchildren, it no longer is a tool of the people)
Political spectrum :
Totalitarianism / Individualism
Everything in between in both the economic or political spectrum is in flux, constantly moving in one direction or the other.
We find ourselves arguing over different shades of gray. And while all things in this world aren't just black or white, the shades is defined by the ratio there of the two.
The 4 quadrant approach allows a quantifiable visual representation from 4 points of absolutism, a diamond if you will from point to point.

Brilliant visualization
Even then, where does a religious authoritarian regime fall on the chart vs state oriented?
Both left wing?
