Trump is probably being pragmatic. You can't judge this on Ron alone. You have to look at the entire field of people who are running. There could be another candidate that is more well-known, has more funds, and is much more likely to win than Ron. No slight against Ron, it simply is what it is.

Trump and the white hats do not have anything to gain by propping up candidates that will lose.
Ron needs to start local and prove that he has what it takes to win a smaller election.
