It was more of an attempt at guilt tripping people by making an analogy of how not to treat people you're trying to gain support from.
Ironically, this point apparently went over the writer's head.
I do believe the writer assumes the "deplorables" were lucky because intelligence couldn't have been the reason behind their decision to avoid the jab, and that fellow liberals who refused were selfish and headstrong and it was their obstinance that paid off in the end.
Simple. Whoever has capital letters next to their name, wears a labcoat or suit, and is given a public platform to read a scri- err, express their opinions.
