I remember how terrified I was when my mom had us start walking to school. I was like how will I be sure I can get there. It was fine the first time even, even though it felt a little weird for a while.
Edit: I would guess this was 2nd/3rd grade, maybe a little later. WAY too long ago by this point. "Those were the days."
My mother walked with me the first time, and someone else in the project walked with me some after that. It was a long walk for a five-year-old with a lot of turns.
I walked to school when I was five years old, a long distance from the project through a bad part of town to the school. This was in the late 50s.
