Funny you say that. After the Black Plague killed off 1/3 of the population in Europe, there was a shit load of ‘wealth’ that got shared amongst the surviving 2/3. Not just the elites, everybody. They were so grateful for surviving that horrible shit, and having more ‘stuff’ (broadly speaking) they pretty much collectively funded the renaissance.
