In addition to attempting to pad the IRS with an ungodly number of additional agents, the IRS still hasn't processed my 2021 tax return. I first filed it in March, by mail because Turbo Tax was glitching. I am owed over $3k. I checked in June to see if they'd processed it, and their website said they hadn't received it. Rather than call (where every agent gives you a different answer and leaves you with no proof of what was discussed), I wrote a cover memo over a second copy of my return and submitted it by mail again (this time with registration so I could prove it was sent and received). To this date, still no refund. Hard to imagine they could be that screwed up...

Tax accountant pede here. They are massively backed up on processing paper anything. Those that filed paper in February are getting their refunds now.
Yes, they do pay you interest.
If at all possible, file electronically going forward. My electronically filed clients got their refunds super quick this year. Some in less than a week.
Sounds like the real advice is that EVERYONE should file on paper from now on.
The goal should not be "getting your refund." The goal should be making the IRS unable to function at all.
Or set your withholding where you get nothing back. Then all file paper.
Sadly, most people still use tax refunds as a savings account. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve told clients to not let the government hold on to their money, but well .. you know the saying.
If people are trying to do that, I always recommend splitting their paycheck 90% into their regular account and 10% into a savings account. Most employers are happy to do that. Then, the $$ is still in your control.
