I think that wasn't lightning, but instead was Scotty beaming the captain up.

Pretty cool. Wouldn't that freak you out if you were where you could see it. Actually many strikes that seem to hit the ground are also going up, not down, but so fast it isn't seen that way. Must be a similar mechanism. Lightning does lots of weird tricks.
Yeah, lightning destroyed my neighbor's backyard tree, scared the shit out of me and my dogs as we were by the back door at the time. Hubby was outside in front cutting the grass. He felt the electricity in his hands and arms. It wasn't even storming yet.
