So in the special, why are two GOP splitting the vote and allowing a Dem to win? Isn't that a bit stupid. If Begich wasn't running then surely Palin would counter in and she is the Trump endorsed candidate?

This is a primary. AK adopted that ridiculous "ranked choice" voting format, so the results won't be known for a long time; apparently they have until the end of the month to count absentee ballots (yeah, we know how reliable those are :) ).
