Why does anyone need to get permission from the government to get married? Straight or gay? Why does that exist for a license?

To make sure you and your spouse is not married to someone else
Because you are becoming a government agent, a guardian, of any children you give birth to, and the government needs to know that the child already has a father

I admit without adultery laws, it makes little sense. Just know that if you decide to live with your girlfriend you are likely already married under common law marriage.
