I've been saying this for years. Drag is an even more extreme version. Both drag and blackface use grotesque stereotypes of (women)(blacks) FOR THE PURPOSE OF ENTERTAINMENT. Both are perpetrated by groups (men)(whites) with historical power over the groups (women)(blacks) being caricatured. I'm not the first to make this observation. There are numerous rebuttals online by drag performers claiming there is no comparison. The main argument is the supposed long and illustrious history of men performing in women's roles in theater, such as the Greeks and Shakespeare. The problem with that is that was necessary because women weren't ALLOWED to perform in those eras. Also it could be argued that blackface has a long and illustrious (think Al Jolson) history as well. That doesn't make it right. My gender should not be a nightclub act.
