This is why I like the "boring" traditional churches that hold to the "5 Sola's."
Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone)
Sola Gratia (Grace Alone)
Sola Fide (Faith Alone)
Solus Christus (Christ Alone)
Soli Deo Gloria (To God Alone Be Glory)
The church should also be held to a particular standard that is a summary of the Word of God. Like Westminister Larger and Shorter Catechisms, Heidelberg Catechism, Canons of Dort, Belgic Confession, etc.
Anyone serious about their faith should read some of those listed above references. If you don't understand them, they are all scripturally based, and a simple online search should yield the desired information. They take things that are Black and White in the Bible, and form them together. They were written by people who desired to know the truth and keep it in pure form. The men who wrote it died for their faith, proving their convictions to the truth, and studied throughout the ages, as people marveled at their wisdom in such a clean assembly of different Biblical concepts. None of these men claimed the glory for what they wrote, but dedicated their work and their lives to God. Now we, standing on the shoulders of these faithful giants, look down upon them as if we were the better creatures, when we have far less of an understanding of the Bible, though we have infinitely more resources than they could imagine.
