In his book the Psychology of Totalitarianism, Matis Desmet devotes a section to this - how there was a scandal in academia about 15-20 years ago.
Familiarity breeds contempt.
Folks on the outside think that the Ivory Tower is a lot more ideal, perfect, clean, etc. than it is.
Folks on the inside see the flaws.
And worldview determines a lot.
How one answers "what is the end of man" will determine where the rest of his bias' lean towards.
