The important thing is you cannot turn these people around. Arguing with them is fruitless because they don’t want to see the data. They will only come around when the people they trust change their position.
This is why we need to focus on protecting doctors who speak out.
A few years ago, about halfway through Trump’s term (before covid), I was having a debate (argument) with a leftist friend. It was on climate change and he said he trusted the scientists. I asked him why and he said that they were the experts, and that I should trust them too. I asked him then: if the head of NASA came out and claimed climate change was a hoax, would he 1) believe it, or 2) run to a computer to see who Trump appointed to NASA and find out why that person couldn’t be trusted. To his credit he admitted that it was #2, but it was ok because it would be justified. So the lesson really wasn’t that they were trusting the experts, they were trusting the experts that were telling them what they wanted to hear. They’ve made up their mind and will do all the necessary mental gymnastics to keep their ideology intact.
They trust the experts that are endorsed by their favorite celebrity and/or news pundit.
I try tool seek out information that goes against my bias. When cognitive dissonance happens, I know I'm learning something.
But since that's what I like to do, I guess that's my bias. So I do seek out confirmation of my own bias by trying to find unbiased information.
It's a downward spiral that leads quickly to misanthropy.
It's lovely here. Bring a friend. They should have sent a poet.
Even when I'm right twice a day I'm still a broken clock. ⏰🕒
That's key! It's an entirely different approach to life; learning that you've been wrong is a GOOD THING because now you have better information; the alternative is to see learning as BAD and threatening if the new info is disturbing or if it makes you re-evaluate a significant belief.
Wonderfully laid thought trap fren - even if they didn't get it right away it has undoubtedly come to forethought several more times. This is how to catch a wiley NPC!
"For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear." - 2 Timothy 4:3
Wow. Thanks, I don't even remember reading that one before.
Trump endorsed the vaccines so that kinda blows that theory
And notice how most Trump supporters are not taking the vaxx. So his point that leftist minds yield to authority and right minds yield to logic still stands.
No, the point wasn’t about him being anti-Trump, it was about him selectively choosing “experts“ he believed in. If an expert challenged his world view he would just dismiss that expert.
