Klinger was trying to get out the army via a Section 8 Discharge, i.e. crazy for cross dressing. Back then it was a recognized mental disorder. It still is a mental disorder, however today it is celebrated and special, and its part of the special pride month where all the similar mental disorders are celebrated.
