Have compassion, yes. But I totally agree. There is safety in the herd. For a human to be cast out of the group in a hunter/gatherer society could mean death.
Perhaps why teenagers are so driven by peer pressure? The fear of being cast out is at a maximum because they are old enough to understand what needs to happen to take care or themselves, and how hard doing that in isolation would be...just spitballing here.
Could also be why they are so drawn to social media and anything online: they can find a new herd there, where one might not exist for them in real life (or at least, that could be their perception).
