On September 12, 2018, Trump signed EO 13848—Imposing Certain Sanctions in the Event of Foreign Interference in a United States Election. On September 7, 2021, Biden signed a continuation of this EO for 1 year. That deadline ends in 12 days.

Everyone thought it was odd that Biden extended Trump's EO that essentially carried on the punishment for foreign countries that Biden seemed to be connected with. Was Biden's continuation a way of ending Trump's EO a year later?

Trump declared a national emergency when he signed his EO. I think national emergencies end after one year unless they are renewed.

Under the National Emergencies Act, presidents are required to identify the specific powers and provisions to be activated by the declaration of emergency and to renew the declaration annually.

It would seem that Biden will have to renew this EO again or it will end on Sept 12th 2022.

Does the financial penalties against foreign countries still apply to those countries after the EO and national emergency ends? It certainly appears China is guilty of these crimes while the EO was active.

Does this mean we will see something happen between now and Sept 12th or will Biden simply extend it for another year?

Interesting times, we wait and see.
