I've been kind of shopping around for some classic military rifles, but they're getting so expensive. I'm hoping I can find one at an estate sale or pawn shop or something.

I like 30-06. It's been around a long time so there's tons of different ammo available. Lots of different guns to shoot it in too. Brass is easy to get also if you like to hand load. I inherited my dad's bolt action 30-06. Need to get that out to hunt a deer this winter.

check out the Civilian Marksmanship Program, they sell refurbished military weapons like the M1 Garand.

My husband bought one through there many years ago, I think he paid $650 for it. It had brand new wood on it and looks great. Craziest part is, they shipped it straight to our house, not an FFL. I highly recommend this if you are looking for an M1 Garand.

They have different grades of rifles, I think we got the second lowest grade and it is a beautiful weapon. Good luck with the wife!
